At the Women's Justice Project, we hear firsthand from our clients about injustices women experience in Oregon's criminal justice system. We understand the ways issues affecting justice-involved women have long been ignored and the difficulties women face in being heard by decision-makers and the broader community.
We want to "break the silence" so that change can happen. Sharing women's stories of their experiences with the system is a powerful way of doing this. Stories about every step on the journey through the system are important, whether they be about arrest, pre-trial, plea deal, trial, incarceration or re-entry. Your story can illuminate deeper problems, help to change the common narrative about women in the justice system, and be a catalyst for change. By gathering the stories of many women over time, we will be alerted to issues that have not yet come to light but where reform is urgently needed.
